Grand Marais Day Trip:
Shop, Dine, Explore.
While lodging at Lutsen Resort, many guests enjoy a day trip into Grand Marais, a short drive away. This small, charming community, located on a small harbor, is reminiscent of a fishing village on the Atlantic Coast. And indeed, you will find many reminders of Grand Marais' past as a fishing community.
Visitors find a great blend of quaint shops, art galleries, restaurants and gifts shops as well as outfitting stores for those heading for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Try "The World's Best Donuts", eat lunch at the Crooked Spoon on Main Street or the Angry Trout down by the water, take a walk along the breakwater at the harbor or climb up on the roof of Sydney's and enjoy one of their frozen custard deserts while looking out at Lake Superior..
Cook County is home to a wide number of artists who have been attracted by the simple lifestyle, community of artists and beauty of the area. You'll find many galleries throughout the County displaying their work and Grand Marais has a number of interesting galleries.
Grand Marais offers a variety of festivals and events that supplement the cultural events and entertainment found in the Lutsen area.
Grand Marais is also the home of the North House Folk School which offers year-round classes in traditional northern crafts. You can learn to make muk-luks, carve a wood paddle, learn bread-baking, build a traditional kayak from scratch and much more. The North House Folk School is open to the public to drop by and gives weekly tours.
