Guided Hike

Guided Hiking Video

A guide will take you to a nearby destination for a 2-3 mile hike. Throughout the hike you will learn more about the natural environment and cultural history of the area. Destinations include spectacular waterfalls, inspiring vistas and/or awesome shoreline. Springtime conditions make this a different outing every time! Reserve your spot starting 1 week before the activity!

Biking

Lutsen is a biking destination for riders of all skills. You'll find paved trails, back-country forest service roads and tight single track mountain bike riding.

The paved Gitchi Gammi State Trail has an 12 mile section which runs right by Lutsen Resort. A great option is to leave from the main lodge and ride a level 14.5 mile round-trip section to Tofte where you can enjoy a refreshment at the Coho Cafe. From Tofte you can return, or, continue on for another 3 mile section to Schroeder, crossing a bridge over a canyon above the Temperance River. For a taste of Forest Service road riding, park at the nearby Oberg Mountain parking lot, then ride your bike to the end of the road. Round trip is 11km. For single track mountain biking, head to nearby Britton Peak in Tofte or Pincushion Mountain and ride the new single-track mountain bike trails.

Bike Rentals are available nearby at Sawtooth Outfitters in Tofte or Superior North Outdoor Center in Grand Marais.

Walking History Tour

Lutsen Resort just celebrated its 125th Anniversary. We have a rich history, full of colorful characters and timely stories. Join us for a tour around the property and hear the stories that have shaped our beloved resort. Total distance: 1/2 mile.

Yoga

Bring calmness to your mind and energy to your body with an hour of yoga in a quiet area inside the main lodge. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a mat if you have one. No experience necessary.

Hiking Trail Shuttle Service

We offer point-to-point hiking shuttles for the Superior Hiking Trail. Service is available for the trail sections between Temperance River and Cascade River State Park. You park your car at one end, and we'll drop you off at the other. Sign up required 24 hours in advance.

Massage

Relaxation or therapeutic massage is offered at Lutsen Resort by certified massage therapists. Please ask at the front desk for more information. *This resort activity requires an additional fee. Massages start at $85/hour. Advanced reservations are recommended as therapists schedule may vary.

Sea Kayak Tours

Sea Kayaking

Lutsen Resort offers its guests the opportunity to experience sea kayaking on Lake Superior. Caribou Lake provides an additional venue on windy days. Trained and assessed by the America Canoe Association, our guides offer a three hour guided tour throughout the summer and early fall using stable tandem kayaks.

Sea Kayaking on Lake Superior is available for people ages 14 and older. Please wear a swimsuit for beneath the wetsuits we provide and shoes that can get wet while loading and unloading. Cameras, hats, sunglasses and water bottles are also good items to bring along.

Reserve your spot starting 1 week before the activity. This program is very popular; we often have a waiting list and wish to accommodate as many guests as possible so there is a $10 per person No-Show Fee. Reservations must be canceled prior to 8:00pm the evening before the tour.

Family Kayak Tour

Here is an opportunity to take the whole family kayaking. We will head to Caribou Lake, where the water is warm. Participants will get some basic instruction and be accompanied by a professional guide. Tandem kayaks will be used; each participant under 14 years old will need to be accompanied by an adult. Participants must be at least 8 years old.

Reserve your spot starting 1 week before the activity. This program is very popular; we often have a waiting list and wish to accommodate as many guests as possible so there is a $10 per person no-show fee. Reservations must be canceled prior to 8:00pm the evening before the tour.

Fly Fishing Introduction

Fly Fishing Video

This is a great opportunity to become more familiar with fly fishing equipment and techniques. We’ll be using the mouth of the Poplar River on the beach in front of Lutsen Resort, which is a favorite amongst local anglers.

People ages 16 and older must have a current MN fishing license and trout stamp to fish off of the beach/river at the main lodge.

If you are only planning to fish for one day, you can purchase a 24 hour license. The cost is $11 for residents, $13 for non-residents, and includes the ability to fish for trout. You will need to provide a drivers license.

Available for ages 8 and up, each child under the age of 12 must have an adult accompany them.

Charter Fishing

Charter fishing on Lake Superior is an amazing experience. You'll troll along seeing the rugged North Shore from a vantage point few other travelers experience.

For those guests wishing to sample charter fishing, Lutsen Resort has worked out a deal with Tofte Charters, a local outfitter. This is a great way for smaller groups or individuals to enjoy a charter without having to rent the whole boat. Participants are required to provide a MN fishing license with a trout stamp. One day licenses are available on the boat for $11 (MN Resident) or $13 (Non Resident), cash or check only. Make reservations through the resort Activities Desk (the 1 week sign up policy DOES NOT apply to this activity, you can sign up any time).

Lutsen Resort 4 Hour Charter Special ONLY $90/PERSON Available Thursday mornings (July 3th will be an afternoon tour. 2-6PM), June 19-August 28.

You'll need to drive to the boat launch at Taconite harbor by 7:15 AM. The boat will leave at 7:30AM and return at 11:30AM. If you would like a longer half-day or full-day trip, you can make arrangements directly with Captain Darren at www.TofteCharters.com

Tofte Charters has very comfortable boats and United States Coast Guard licensed captains. You will want to bring outdoor clothing. Remember that the temperature is typically a few degrees cooler on the lake. Rainwear is also recommended if there is rain in the forecast. You are welcome to bring your own snacks and beverages on the boat, but please no coolers. Lake Superior lake trout fishing is a great experience for all ages. You certainly need no experience to have a good time. Although Lake Trout is the primary species caught, salmon are a possible catch as well! You are able to keep the fish that you choose and the captain will take care of the cleaning process for you.

Kid’s Camp

3 hours of nature-based outdoor fun for the kids. We'll play games, investigate the natural world, create crafts, and eat a healthy snack. Please bring sturdy shoes, a water bottle, and appropriate clothing for spending the afternoon outside playing. Available for kids ages 4-12. Pizza and Movie

Kids ages 4 to 16 are welcome to join us for delicious pizza and a favorite children's movie. Parents - this is a great opportunity to enjoy dinner on your own! Meet at the Activities Desk and we’ll hike up to the Kid’s Cabin located behind the Main Lodge.Reserve your children's spot starting 1 week before the activity.

Evening Hike

Venture out before sunset for an enjoyable short hike. It’s the perfect activity to work up an appetite for dinner or to wind down the day. Get a taste for the area’s vast hiking options with this great little teaser as the sun gets lower. Reserve your spot starting 1 week before the activity.

Beach Yoga

Bring calmness to your mind and energy to your body with an hour of yoga on the shore of Lake Superior. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a mat if you have one. We intend to use the beach for class when the weather allows, otherwise we’ll find a quiet area in the Main Lodge. All levels welcome.

Naturalist Programs

Join a Forest Service Naturalist Ranger at an evening beach campfire for an intriguing and informative program specific to the area. Public is welcome! There are two programs a week this summer, both 7:30-9pm. Tuesday nights topic is Forest Fire! Friend or Foe? and Thursday nights topic is The Amazing Amusing Moose. Be sure to ask about other Forest Service weekly programs around the area.

Lobby Craft

Let the beauty of nature inspire your craftiness! This is a fun activity for all ages, it usually takes about 15 minutes and is conveniently located at the main lodge. We will make candles, soaps, bird houses or other interesting items, using nature as our guide. Let your creativity flow like the waves…

Golf and Disc Golf

Try our 9 hole "pitch and putt" golf course. Beginning golfers love the "no pressure" situation. Clubs are available on a first come, first served basis at the Activities Desk in the Main Lodge.

No tee times required.

Established in 2007, our 9 hole disc golf course is a mix of lightly wooded and open long holes with some elevation. Targets are metal chain baskets. All holes are dirt tees marked by painted boulders. The course is over 2,652 feet with six holes just under 300 feet, and three holes between 300 and 400 feet. Discs and maps are available at the Activities Desk in the Main Lodge.

Complimentary for Lutsen guests. $5 for non-guests.

Summer – Interested in hiking a point-to-point section of the Superior Hiking Trail? We can help! This is a great opportunity to see some beautiful backcountry trails. Service is available for the trail sections between the Cascade River and Temperance River State Parks. First, we'll follow you to your end point, then you'll jump in our van and we'll drive you to your start point. Spend all day hiking without having to backtrack. Please sign up 24 hours in advance, so we are better able to accommodate you.

Available every evening, they provide an unforgettable setting for romantic moments or for a family group to enjoy a memorable time together. Just ask at the front desk and we’ll get it started and you can keep it going as long as you like. We’ve also got the makings for S’mores available; you're never too young or too old to enjoy these traditional sticky delights!

Lawn games are the perfect way to spend an afternoon with your family, and a little competition never hurt anyone. Spend a day playing horseshoes on our beach just a stones throw away from Lake Superior or check out a croquet set from the activities staff and head out to the grass for a quick game. The highlight of our lawn games is our four lane shuffleboard court right beside the Main Lodge. Pick up a cue and slide the puck down the court trying to score against your opponent.

Sea Villa Playground

Located just down from the guest building in the middle of the Villas and right next to Lake Superior, this park area is a glorious spot to spend time as a family. Picnic Tables and benches overlook the shore just a short walk from your unit.

Swimming Pool

Lutsen Resort has two swimming pool complexes, including hot tubs and saunas at both. Guests staying around the Main Lodge have access to the Main Lodge pool while Sea Villa guests can enjoy the pool at that site, including a splash deck.

Live Music

You'll find a great variety of live acoustic music at the resort. On Saturday evenings in the Summer, head to the Main Lodge lobby and enjoy a mix of local and regional musicians. Every Thursday evening during the summer, enjoy local music around a campfire on the beach from 6-9pm.

Massage

Lutsen Resort’s WatersMeet Massage and Wellness Center is the perfect spot for a relaxing massage. The site overlooks Lake Superior and provides a relaxing experience for individuals and couples alike. You can book an individual massage or a couples massage, or, many women’s groups enjoy booking the whole space for their “girlfriend getaway”. Following your massage, retire to the relaxation room or outdoor deck to complete the experience. Advanced reservations are recommended as therapists schedule may vary.

The Main Lodge has a game room with ping pong and video games. Located near the dining room and pub, parents with a supply of quarters, can enjoy a leisurely meal on their own.

Cross Country Skiing

This is the best Minnesota cross country skiing around! Two trail systems within minutes of Lutsen Resort  have over 150 kilometers of groomed and tracked cross-country trails winding through a spectacular variety of terrain with Lake Superior overlooks, open maple forests, canopies of cedar wetlands with deer and wolf tracks, across sunny meadows and small ponds. The trails vary from short beginner loops and longer 6 to 10 km. intermediate loops to half-day and day-long skis with a fabulous 25 km. loop for experienced skiers.

Our staff are avid cross country skiers and always know the latest ski conditions. They can also direct you to cross-country ski maps and trail descriptions.

The resort has complimentary xc skis and snowshoes available for guests. The resort provides a waxing room for cross-country skiers.

Dress warm and meet in the Main Lodge lobby for some great Minnesota cross-country skiing. Our staff outfits you with cross country skis, boots and poles. You are required to provide a Minnesota Cross Country Ski Pass. We take a shuttle to a nearby trail and get a brief introduction to using the equipment. From there, we start skiing and take our time to enjoy the winter woods while becoming more comfortable on the skis. Beginner skiers welcome.

Shuttle Service

Winter – Avoid headaches and long walks - use our door-to-door shuttle service to Lutsen Mountains Ski Area. In the morning, we'll pick you up at your unit and drop you off in front of the ticket office on the ski hill. In the afternoon, we'll drop you back off at your unit. Please call the front desk or dial 0 to schedule a pick up. Service is offered Saturday/Sunday 8:30-4:30 and Mon-Fri 9-4:30.

Guided Snowshoe Hike

Always wanted to try snowshoeing? Here's your chance! Meet in the Main Lodge lobby before your tour where our staff outfits you with a pair of snowshoes.  We take a shuttle to a nearby trail, learn how to strap them on, and then we'll enjoy a relaxed hike through the winter woods. With a little luck, we may spot some wildlife! No experience necessary.  Sign up starting 1 week before the tour. Dial 0 or stop by the front desk to reserve your spot.

If you want to head out on your own, you'll find an array of snowshoe options nearby. Hike a trail to a wilderness outlook or go off-trail. The resort has complimentary adult and children's snowshoes available as well as maps of snowshoe trails.  See the activities desk for more information.

On Saturday evenings throughout the winter cozy up in the Main Lodge lobby next to the warm fireplace for a mix of local and regional musicians. Every Tuesday and Thursday evening enjoy local music in the Poplar River Pub from 6-9pm..

Winter Tracking

 

Find out what the tracks of area animals look like in winter.  We'll spend some time in the snow learning about different walking types and then we'll go in search of actual tracks and try to identify them while keeping an eye out for other animal signs.

Resort Activities

Visit our Guest Activities Desk in the Main Lodge for area information and resort programs. We have on-site recreational professionals available daily whose focus is to assist you with information and access to resort and area activities. Call 218-663-6695 or email for additional information.

All activities are complimentary for guests (except massage and summer charter fishing) and equipment is provided for each activity. For safety reasons we do not loan or rent out our kayaks or fly fishing poles outside of each tour.

We do require a reservation (and recommend it as some fill up quickly) for most activities. Resevations for activities can only be made by calling the activities desk. You can sign up starting 1 week prior to the activity starting at 8AM. (ex. reserve Tuesday for the following Tuesday)
